An Old Coal Town

Spray Foam Insulation in Carbon Hill works on homes in one of the county's oldest coal towns. Carbon Hill was settled in 1886 because of coal and the railroad, got a post office in 1887, and incorporated on February 14, 1891. Robert Galloway's coal company drove its early growth. The town had 1,769 residents in 2020.

Storms

Carbon Hill has a long storm record. An F3 tornado on May 27, 1917, destroyed 200 homes across an area 3 miles wide and 17 miles long. An EF1 passed through on April 12, 2020, snapping trees and damaging homes. Roof damage lets water into attics, so we check insulation under any repaired roof.

Depression-era work

Wikipedia notes Carbon Hill used WPA and PWA funding during the Depression to build a new high school and improve sewers, sidewalks and streets. Some homes date from that era or earlier, with little insulation anywhere.

What older homes need

Attic air sealing and depth, closing up open wall tops, insulating the floor over the crawl space and sealing the rim joist. Walls can be filled with dense-pack after that.

Open wall tops in older homes

Many homes built in Carbon Hill's early decades have wall cavities that open straight into the attic, with no top plate to stop air. Warm air rises through them into the attic in winter, and hot attic air drops into the walls in summer. Adding loose fill on top does not stop that. We plug the tops with rigid board or foam first, then add depth. If the walls are empty, dense-pack cellulose fills them through small holes. HomeGuide lists dense-pack at $1.60 to $4.20 per square foot.

Carbon Hill Questions

Should I check insulation after a roof repair?

Yes. Wet or matted insulation under the repair should be replaced.

What do older Carbon Hill homes need?

Attic, floor and rim joist work first, then walls.

Do you work west of Jasper?

Yes, in Carbon Hill and toward Nauvoo.

Can you insulate walls in an old house?

Usually with dense-pack through small holes.

Why plug wall tops before adding attic insulation?

Open wall tops let air flow between the walls and the attic. Loose fill does not stop it; a seal does.
