Older Houses, Two Seasons

Spray foam insulation in Jasper is mostly about older houses that have to handle hot, humid summers and real winter cold. Jasper was settled around 1815 and incorporated in 1886, when two railroads came through and the population jumped from 200 to more than 3,000 in four years. Walker County grew on coal, and much of its housing was built for working families long before insulation codes. We are spray foam insulation contractors who seal and insulate those homes, using closed-cell or open-cell foam where it pays and blown-in where it does the job for less.

The code and the targets

Walker County is in IECC climate zone 3A. Alabama adopted the 2015 IECC with state amendments on October 1, 2016. Alabama's amended code, as summarized by Southface's Alabama field guide and the Insulation Institute, lists R-30 for ceilings, R-20 or R-13 plus R-5 continuous for wood-frame walls, R-19 for floors and R-13 (or R-5 continuous) for crawl space walls in zone 3. For existing homes, the Department of Energy suggests R-49 to R-60 for an uninsulated attic, R-38 to R-49 more on top of 3 to 4 inches, and R-19 for an uninsulated floor. Many older Walker County homes have far less than any of those numbers.

Where Jasper homes lose comfort

The usual Walker County house sits on a crawl space. In summer, the vented crawl space pulls in humid air that condenses on ducts and floor framing. In winter, the same air chills the floor. At the top of the house, the attic floor leaks around lights, fans, pipes, wiring and the hatch, and the old insulation has settled to a few inches. Older homes often have walls with little or nothing in them. Fixing the attic and the crawl space together is usually the biggest single step; walls come next.

Closed cell vs open cell

HomeGuide lists open-cell foam at about R-3.5 to R-3.7 per inch and closed-cell at about R-5 to R-7. Open-cell is soft, expands a lot and seals air well; it is the usual pick under a roof deck and in above-grade walls. Closed-cell is dense, slows water vapor and does not soak up water; it is the pick for rim joists, crawl space walls, the underside of floors and steel buildings. On a wide-open attic floor, sealing and blowing loose fill usually beats foam on price.

Hills, woods and water

Wikipedia describes Walker County as part of the Cumberland Plateau, with plateaus, valleys and a lot of forest, and it is home to the William B. Bankhead National Forest and Lewis Smith Lake. Hillside lots can push rain water toward foundations, and wooded lots keep crawl spaces shaded and damp. We check for standing water before laying any liner, and we look at gutters and grading when water is the real problem.

Spray foam insulation cost

HomeGuide's 2026 guide puts installed spray foam at $1.50 to $5.00 per square foot: about $1.50 to $3.50 for open-cell and $3.00 to $5.00 for closed-cell. About 1,000 square feet runs $1,500 to $5,000, and many spray foam insulation companies set a job minimum of $1,000 to $2,000 or more. Fixr lists $3.15 to $7.50 per square foot for foam in existing walls. Those are national ranges; access, thickness, prep and removal of old material decide the number, and you pay the figure on your written estimate.

What to ask insulation contractors

Whether you search for spray foam insulation near me or call a name a neighbor gave you, ask any insulation company the same things. What will you seal before insulating? Which material goes in each area, how thick, and for what R-value? What happens with the crawl space vents and the attic vents? How long should we stay out after spraying? HomeGuide's guidance is at least 24 hours. Is the price broken out by area? We put all of that on our quotes.

Owners who stay

The 2020 census found 74.6% of occupied housing in Walker County owner-occupied. People here tend to keep their homes a long time, which means insulation work keeps paying back in comfort and lower bills for years.

Towns We Serve

We work in Jasper and across Walker County: Sumiton and Dora to the southeast along US 78; Cordova on the Mulberry Fork; Parrish and Oakman to the southwest; Carbon Hill to the west; Nauvoo and Sipsey to the north and east. We also go up into Winston County to Double Springs, Arley and Haleyville, and down to Graysville in northwest Jefferson County. Many of these towns started as coal, rail or mill towns, so older frame houses on crawl spaces are common. Newer homes on wooded lots, lake cabins near Smith Lake and plenty of steel shops round out the work.

Common Questions

How much does spray foam insulation cost in Jasper?

HomeGuide lists installed spray foam at $1.50 to $5.00 per square foot. Open-cell is at the lower end and closed-cell at the higher end. Most jobs here are an attic, a crawl space or a shop, and we give a written price after a visit.

Why is spray foam insulation now a red flag for some home buyers?

Some buyers and inspectors worry that foam on a roof deck hides roof leaks and rot, and that badly installed foam can leave odors. Careful installation, leak checks first and paperwork showing what was installed address most of those concerns.

Does it snow in Jasper?

We cannot predict any given winter, but cold nights are the reason floor and attic insulation matter here as much as summer heat does. That is why we plan every job for both seasons.

What R-value should a Walker County attic have?

Alabama's code summary lists R-30 for ceilings in zone 3. The DOE suggests R-49 to R-60 for an uninsulated attic, or adding R-38 to R-49 over 3 to 4 inches.

Should I insulate my crawl space or my floor?

If the crawl space stays vented, insulate the floor, ideally to R-19. If it can be closed off and kept dry, seal it and insulate the walls instead. We crawl it and tell you which fits.

Can you insulate a metal shop or garage?

Yes. Closed-cell foam on the steel stops condensation and cuts heat. We size the thickness to how you use the building.
