Foam That Fits the Surface
Spray foam insulation goes on as a liquid, expands and cures in place, so one layer both insulates and blocks air. Older Walker County homes leak air at the rim joist, through the floor, around attic penetrations and in walls, and foam is the fastest way to close many of those gaps. We use two kinds and choose for each surface.
Closed cell vs open cell
Closed-cell foam is dense and rigid. HomeGuide rates it at R-5 to R-7 per inch, and at typical thickness it slows water vapor and does not soak up water. Open-cell is light and soft, around R-3.5 to R-3.7 per inch, expands to fill odd spaces and quiets sound, but lets vapor pass. Around Jasper, closed-cell goes in damp or cold places: rim joists, crawl space walls, under floors and on steel. Open-cell goes under roof decks and in above-grade walls.
Rim joists
The rim joist is the band of framing on top of the foundation wall, all the way around the house. In older homes it is often bare wood with gaps, and cold air pours in along it all winter. Closed-cell sprayed 2 to 3 inches thick seals and insulates it in one pass. It is one of the most useful small foam jobs in a Walker County house.
Under floors and in crawl spaces
If the crawl space stays vented, closed-cell on the underside of the subfloor seals drafts through the boards and insulates. Alabama's code summary lists R-19 for floors in zone 3. If the crawl space is sealed, foam goes on the walls instead; the summary lists R-13 or R-5 continuous for crawl space walls.
Roof decks and walls
In vaulted ceilings and in attics that hold ducts, foam on the roof deck brings that space inside the insulated envelope. In open walls during a remodel, foam seals around wiring and boxes. The zone 3 wall value in Alabama's code summary is R-20, or R-13 plus R-5 continuous; closed-cell gets more R-value into a 2x4 wall than batts can.
Before and after
Foam does not fix leaks or rot, and it should not cover old wiring or vermiculite until those are checked. We look first. HomeGuide advises staying out for at least 24 hours after spraying. Get a free estimate

Spray Foam Insulation Questions
Who manufactures spray foam insulation?
Several companies make professional spray foam systems. We list the product we plan to use on your quote so you can read its data sheet.
Is closed-cell foam worth the extra cost?
In damp or cold spots like rim joists, crawl spaces and under floors, usually yes. Under a dry roof deck, open-cell often does the job for less.
Can foam be sprayed in winter?
In heated spaces, yes. Cold crawl spaces and shops need the surface and foam in a working temperature range, so we add heat or pick a milder day.
Does spray foam stop moisture?
Closed-cell slows vapor and keeps humid air off cold surfaces. It is not waterproofing and does not fix leaks.
